What is LASIK surgery?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the world's most performed vision correction procedure, used to correct myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness) and astigmatism and remove specs.

A thin corneal flap is created by a femtosecond laser (bladeless LASIK) or a mechanised blade (blade LASIK). An excimer laser then reshapes the cornea to correct your eye power. The flap is replaced and heals naturally. Most patients achieve clear vision within 24–72 hours and can see clearly without specs or contact lenses.

Shroff Eye Centre was among the first in North India to offer modern LASIK surgery almost 25 years ago. Today, we work on advanced ELITA and WAVELIGHT Plus platforms with a team of highly trained specialists.

Types of LASIK

There are two main LASIK techniques. Your surgeon will recommend the option most appropriate for your eyes.

Bladeless LASIK uses a femtosecond laser to create the corneal flap instead of a blade, which is why it is sometimes called FemtoLASIK. The second step of corneal reshaping is done by an excimer laser.

  • More precise
  • Safer
  • Better refractive predictability

The femtolaser controls flap thickness, diameter and angle with greater accuracy. At Shroff Eye Centre, we use the ELITA femtolaser from J&J and Wavelight excimer laser from Alcon for bladeless Contoura LASIK and Wavelight Plus Sightmap.

How does LASIK compare to SILK, SMILE & PRK?

All four procedures correct eye power through different techniques. LASIK creates a corneal flap; SILK, SMILE and PRK do not.

How LASIK eye surgery works — step by step

LASIK usually takes about 15–20 minutes in total for both eyes. You will feel no pain and can go home soon after surgery.

Your pre-LASIK check is done at least a day before surgery. It includes detailed eye tests to map and measure your cornea. Our surgeons also discuss alternatives such as SILK if one is better for your eyes. Because your eyes are dilated, you will not be able to drive after this appointment.

Who can get LASIK done?

LASIK is suitable for many people, but a detailed assessment is essential.

You are likely a good LASIK candidate if you:

  • Are between 18 and 40 with a stable eye power for around 12 months
  • Have a prescription within the safely treatable range for your cornea
  • Have adequate corneal thickness and a healthy corneal shape
  • Do not play contact sports or work in combat professions
  • Do not have chronic dry eye or progressive eye conditions
  • Are not pregnant or lactating

Suitability for LASIK, or any procedure, can only be confirmed after a thorough pre-operative check-up.

What are the risks of LASIK?

LASIK is one of the most studied elective surgical procedures in the world. Serious risks are uncommon, but every patient should understand the possible side effects.

01

Temporary dryness

Dry eye, grittiness and light sensitivity are common during the first few weeks and usually resolve with lubricating drops.

02

Vision fluctuation

Some patients experience short-term changes in clarity as the cornea heals.

03

Correction variability

A small percentage may experience under- or overcorrection because individual healing patterns differ.

04

Rare complications

Infection and corneal ectasia are rare. Careful screening, sterile protocols and follow-up care keep these risks low.

LASIK COST IN DELHI
